Aaaaaanyway.
Quite a mysterious one at the outset, this. It does a build up of mystery very well.
Sadly a lot of the secondary cast are annoying. The scientist, Cornish, is a pillock and General Carrington is a bit of a tit. Possible because anyone that bangs on about “moral duty” is always bound to annoy me… There's also another annoying scientist and a very annoying journalist but thankfully we havbe the Brigadier who can make up for other people's dullness.
The central plot seems a little tenuous. The General kidnaps three alien ambassadors in order to stop their alien chums from invading. To me it seems this is gonna make most aliens even more likely to invade rather than less, but what do I know? I’m not a mental General with a dubious moustache.
Quite a sinister one, as well. though Lots of plots and sub-plots as people conspire against each other. Those sort of plots and counter-plots are the sort of thing you can imagine happening if aliens ever made themselves known to us and different branches of government were working against each other with competing interests.
I do like this story but I think it absolutely could have done with being shorter. 4 parts, maybe 5 at the outside. It does feel a little as though they said “We have a story and we have 7 weeks to fill. Make it work”. As such I think that reduces the rewatch likelihood somewhat.
