Ooookay, so here we go with the last reconstruction I need to worry about until 1979… I must say, I have actually enjoyed recons a lot more than I expected. I thought they would be much harder work but the reality has been that a great story – Marco Polo and Web of Fear to name but two – can still come across well in that format.
This, however, is not a great story. Or even a good one. Mediocre would even be stretching things a bit…
First of all, it takes the best part of 15 minutes for the TARDIS to appear. I guess this would be a clever, maybe innovative, touch if it wasn’t for the fact that so little seems to happen in those 15 minutes. We meet some pirates. They’re in space. They nick stuff. That’s about the size of it.
For a 6 part story I really feel as though I should be able to write something about more than just about 20 words. But I can’t. Truth is this story is a turgid, dragging mess and I spent most of it looking forward to The War Games.
I’m really not sure what’s going on in this story. I’m not sure anything actually IS going on. There’s a bloke with an incomprehensibly think American accent, there’s some pirates and there are some blokes in uniforms who just tit about trying to catch the pirates.
Plus side – Troughton is great. But he’s not in it very much. So even that one upside is ruined.
It’s entirely possible that this story was lost on purpose. Dreck. Utter, utter dreck. 1/10.
