I’ve been looking forward to this. It’s been years since I saw this story and it was only released on DVD this week – the last complete story to be released. It is a story with some serious affection harbored towards it by Who fans so I’ve been anticipating it for a while.
Sadly though, it’s not actually that much of a classic.
We’re in Scotland, a few miles from Loch Ness, when something large has been taking out oil rigs in the North Sea. Three guesses what that something large is going to be, right?
The Scotland scenery is nice enough (even if it was filmed in Sussex) but the repeated use of very loud bagpipes in annoying and just seems to shout “LOOK AT US, WE’VE SET A STORY IN SOCTLAND, LOOK, BAGPIPES AND EVERYTHING!”.
So, there’s a Zygon spaceship underneath Loch Ness. It’s been there a while and they’ve decided to take over the Earth, using their pet bloody-great-cyborg. That’s pretty much the story in a nutshell.
It’s odd, because it’s quite an enjoyable story in itself but there little in the way of actual plot. The sets are lovely and the Zygon ship really adds to the ambience.
The biggest downside is that at the end of the story – and with no real explanation – Harry leaves the TARDIS crew.
I’m not sure how this came to have such an iconic standing amongst fans. Possibly I’m in a bad mood as I have a nasty cold at the time of watching this but I’m really not sure it’s all it’s cracked up to be.
6/10.
