Series 3
And thus ends another season. A strange series, dominated by the Daleks’ Master Plan but with an unhealthy dose of mediocrity surrounding it. Only a couple of highlights, sadly…
Galaxy 4 – Just dull. Not bad. Certainly not good. Nothing to it at all, really 3/10
Mission to the Unknown – Oddity. May be quite good in retrospect… 7/10
The Myth Makers – Hidden gem. Only loses a point for the producers bottling the opportunity create one of the greatest puns in TV history – 9/10
The Daleks’ Master Plan – Coming of age for the Daleks, really. Too long and a few unnecessary episodes but it’s very dark and the ending is fantastic – 8/10.
Feast of Steven – I refuse to count this as part of the Daleks’ Master Plan – it is an aberration, an errant interruption. Dire. 0/10.
The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve – Very disjointed and very unsatisfying. Get points for the Hartnell scene at the end but really doesn’t work for me that well – disappointing 4/10
The Ark – Good twist that supports a lot of the rest of the story. Enjoyed it quite a bit but somehow doesn’t reaches the heights of the greats… 7/10
The Celestial Toymaker – It gets points because of the central concept. And then loses all but one of those back again because of the production. Badly executed, badly scripted and (apart from Steven) badly acted. Oh, and racist. Don’t forget the racist. 1/10.
The Gunfighters – Probably the most out and out enjoyable story of the series so far. A decent western and would have worked as a movie… 9/10
The Savages – Interesting idea but very plodding. Very disappointing departure for one of my favourite companions of the Hartnell era - 5/10
The War Machines – Again, nice idea but resolved very quickly. Points for getting rid of Dodo and brining in Ben and Polly - 6/10
You can see why the producers so badly wanted some form of change…
And I’m bored of doing series reviews now. From now on I’ll actually try and score the stories as I go…
